COBO Center: Home of Big Shows and Big Events in the City of Detroit
Home to a variety of concerts, auto shows and sports teams for more than 40 years, Cobo Center is situated in downtown Detroit. Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center and the adjacent Cobo Arena are named for Albert E. Cobo, mayor of Detroit from 1950 to 1957.
Designed by Gino Rossetti, both the arena and conference center opened in 1960. In
1989, the Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center underwent a significant
expansion and currently holds 700,000 square feet (65,030 m²) of exhibition space.
Each
January, Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center hosts the North American
International Auto Show or NAIAS. The Conference/Exhibition Center,
along with Cobo Arena and the adjacent Joe Louis Area, are physically
linked to all downtown Detroit hotels and entertainment districts by
the Detroit People Mover, the only elevated railway system of its kind
in the United States.
