Welcoming Immigrants to America for More Than a Century

April 5th, 2008

She’s one of the country’s most recognized women and she has aged
gracefully since her arrival in 1886. Lighting the way for immigrants,
visitors, and travelers, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the
United States by France in commemoration of the country’s centennial
and as a gesture of friendship from France. Student group travelers who
make the journey to see her are rewarded with a new sense of
citizenship and pride.

Standing at Liberty Island, the statue
has served as the ultimate symbol of a new life, freedom, and
opportunity for all who have gazed upon her. From 1886 until the early
1950’s, she was often one of the first glimpses of the United States
for millions of immigrants when their voyage from Europe arrived in New
York.

The Best Educational Experiences in Washington, DC

April 5th, 2008

Educational travel can give teachers
and administrators a boost in exciting many students about their
academic lessons. Travel brings curriculum to life while teaching
lessons that students will need throughout their lives. As a former
middle school principal I found that educational travel goes
hand-in-hand with offering a total educational program to young
adolescents. This is even more important today as teachers and
principals are facing increased pressure to prepare students to pass
mandated academic tests.

During
my years teaching in middle school, I learned that young adolescents
can gain a multitude of invaluable experiences from travel, learning
both the information they will be able to apply in the classroom and
skills that will help them develop personally. Unfortunately, some
young people will never be able to take educational tours without
involvement with their school. So, middle school educators can
contribute to a young adolescent’s complete education when they include
education travel in their program.

United Nations Great Place For Students To Visit While In NYC

April 4th, 2008

As
the site of many of the most significant events in recent world
history, the United Nations Headquarters is a great stop for students
visiting New York City.

The
United Nations is officially considered international territory, with
the land not being part of either the city of New York or the United
States, the host country.

When
visitors pass through the gates of the United Nations Headquarters,
they enter 18 acres of international territory, extending from 42nd street to 48th
street and from First Avenue to the East River. Officially the land
belongs to all countries who belong to the UN, now 192 member states.
The United Nations has its own security and fire forces, issues its own
postage stamps and conducts business in its six official languages:
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Eclectic Florida Shopping Caters to Student Tours

April 4th, 2008

Educational travel
combines elements such as adventure, cultural encounters, and learning
experiences to open students’ minds to new opportunities. Travel
provides an element of learning totally unique from the classroom. But
let’s be honest, while on an extended tour students also need some
leisure time, shopping and entertainment to fit the bill. Not only is
shopping most teenagers’ favorite pastime, it’s also a great way to
experience a locale, such as Orlando, Florida. Here, student tours are
treated to exciting shopping/entertainment complexes that offer hours
of fun.

The Smithsonian Institution: Our Nation’s Historical Museum

April 4th, 2008

If Washington, D.C., is the capital city of the United States, the Smithsonian Institution is its museum. Founded by British scientist James Smithson (1765–1829)
for the “increase and diffusion” of knowledge in a bequest to the
United States, the Smithsonian contains more than 142 million items in
its collection. Student groups touring Washington, DC can learn about
art, history, culture, science, and technology when they visit the
Smithsonian Museums.

The
majority of the Smithsonian’s facilities are located on the National
Mall in D.C., but several also exist in Virginia, New York City, and
Panama. The most notable museums are the Smithsonian Institution
Building, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of American
History, National Museum of Natural History, and the National Zoo.
